gatsby? what gatsby?

“well, ‘ive had a very bad time, and i’m pretty cynical about everything.” - daisy buchanan

i know everyone is anticipating this movie, but here’s proof that i’ve been waiting since november 2010. my all time favorite book, my favorite director (baz lurhmann), and the number one love of my life (LEONARDO DI CAPRIO - ARE YOU KIDDING ME). i remember sitting in my college apartment and reading that carey mulligan had been cast as daisy, and thinking about perfect that was. on monday vogue released their may cover, and it really couldn’t capture the complicated character of daisy buchanan more perfectly. bravo. this movie will either be my greatest upset or have me in tears for at least a solid week.

PRE FALL YALL.

Sometimes Christmas comes early, and sometimes it comes in the form of 3.1 Phillip Lim’s Pre-Fall collection.

With true runway seasons becoming more and more elaborately focused on editorial experimentation and fantasy dressing, Pre-Fall and Resort are becoming a poor girl’s reference of what to wear on a daily basis. At minimal credit, off-seasons provide a nice resounding foundation of silhouettes to stick with. EXAMPLE: things that still feel relevant include cropped slim trousers, ankle booties, sweatshirts, collars, and a boxy take on the feminine aesthetic. At the risk of sounding trite, if next year is anything like 3.1 Phillip Lim’s presentation, then I’m just frankly ecstatic for what 2013 is going to look like - sartorially and literally.

Other Pre-Fall favorites include: Proenza Schouler (SURPRISE SURPRISE), Kelly Wearstler’s graphic chicness, 10 Crosby Derek Lam’s casual approach to well-tailored looks, and Oscar de la Renta because the man can mix texture and print like no one else on this planet.

BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK?

3.1 PHILLIP LIM

WAIT. LET’S STOP. The below outfit could define the next year of my life, and I feel really good about that.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA

resort 13.

RESORT: that season between fall and spring when we all jet to bali for a month to holiday.

normally resort shows are exactly what you’d expect…short suits created for people that jet to fiji for a month. however, oscar de la renta and chanel both redefined what resortwear should be. and it is SICK.

first, chanel. karl lagerfeld dubbed this “HIP HOP VERSAILLES”, which to me reads, “marie antoinette on acid in 2013”. this show oddly reminds me of lisa frank in cotton candy pastels, which is a SUPER good thing you guys.

a big take away: will need to purchase platform gold lame sneakers, reminiscent of baby spice circa 1996.

oscar. oh oscar. the luxury brand that has completely captured a new demographic through their innovative use of social media. the show was live pinned (as in pinterest-ed) here - and you should definitely check out said pinterest board for some incredible photos.

all of the models were styled with neon hair extensions, a pretty bold statement for a house who’s customer spends an average $3,317 per transaction (?!??!?!). i think SEVERAL brands, clothing and other consumer products (cough cough), could learn from oscar’s revolutionary steps taken to reinvent the brand from stodgy grandma’s closet to sick neon extensions capturing a younger audience. i’m transfixed, clearly.

maybe vogue said it best - “Fall is set to bring fashion into full-on freak-chic mode, so there is something to be said for creating clothes that are unpretentious yet beautifully rendered”

this look is so 1997. jennifer aniston would have rocked it in friends, but it’s still chic and relevant. note the return of the peplum.

ugh. THE LACE.

THIS sequined baseball tee became available for sale immediately after the show. again, an extremely fashion forward step for the brand. all yours for the price of $2,500.

but still…this look is sick. the tartan skirt and baseball tee scream a certain marc jacobs. a bold step for odlr.

all that to say - you can take the pantsuits away from oscar…but you can’t take away the class.

amen and amen.

see ya in fiji. xoxo.

Oscar de la Renta

Oscar de la Renta is probably my favorite designer of all time. For being in the business for 40 years, he always stays close enough to his signature “ladies who lunch” looks but provides fresh and unexpected inspiration each season. Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of OdlR is that for a classic luxury fashion house, the brand has recently made themselves extremely powerful in the world of social media by live streaming their shows, curating a tumblr, consistently tweeting inside the house, and instagramming daily. Their PR has successfully made them relevant to a new generation, while still promoting their image of not quite everyday accessible.

The opening three looks were extremely dramatic gowns with laser cut tops, seemingly a homage to Oscar’s years as an assistant to Cristobal Balenciaga in Spain (for full dramatic effect you MUST watch this).

Typical daytime suits were updated with neon colors, chiffon blouses and a socks paired with sandals.

Classic florals for daytime and evening.

Frothy pastels.

Note the neon harem pants. OH also - in the front row. Ashley Olsen and Justin Timberlake. No big deal.

And the final look. Absolutely stunning.

resort & beginnings.

And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer. {F. Scott Fitzgerald}

There’s something exhilarating about living in a city of 800,000 people and only knowing one other person, and that’s because he just moved here too. Lately I’ve been living in boxes, eating lots of Chinese takeout, and slowly slowly slowly adjusting to waking up and going to work at 8 every morning. My days are filled with food and cookware and buying and I’m loving it very much. I have not neglected my first love. In fact, I’ve been facing a closet dilemma as of late because I don’t know what to wear A) to work and B) in a city that is COLD and doesn’t know summer.

In the mean time, here’s some incredible pictures from behind the scenes at Oscar de la Renta’s 2012 resort show. See the rest here and see the entire collection here.

“you have no idea how boring everything was before i met you”

I just watched “An Education” for the first time. It was filled with so much inspiration that I want to jump inside of it. London in 1961. Vintage cocktail dresses. Falling for the wrong guy. Sign me up please.

I’d smoke French cigarettes with my girlfriends in the English countryside.

I’d run through the cobblestone streets in the rain.

I’d be enthralled by this Oscar de la Renta-inspired lounge singer’s gown.

I always secretly wished I’d gone to a uniformed prep school. PS Does this look remind anyone else of Alexa Chung?

Vintage Narnia. I can’t imagine anything more enchanting.

SEXUAL TENSION for the win!

I want to live inside this apartment.

Ah, yes. Twas full of inspiration. And in the end, I will admit to tearing up. And then wanting to wear a 1950s classic cut OdlR.

Go watch. Be inspired and be lovely.
