MENS FALL 13.

MEN’S FALL FAVORITES THUS FAR:

LOUIS VUITTON FALL 13. Hold the phones, we could stop here and look no further than this National Geographic, nature inspired collection with snow leopard coats, ethnic Bhutanese prints, and elegant Asian carpet bags.

BURBERRY. Christopher Bailey is an utter genius. Tailored masculinity juxtaposed with hints of leopard feels like the perfect blend for an iconic house looking to push the boundaries. Also, structured mixed print doctor bags - YES.

CARVEN. Carven’s Fall line is for the 20something French hipster-gone-professional. If the Carven Fall line is for you, please call me.

GIVENCHY. Tonal texture, noted.

image

MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA. Turtlenecks have never felt more relevant.

image

MONCLER GAMME BLEU. Thom Browne’s highly overexaggerated Scottish spectacle is a bit much, but let’s look past his man skirts and Les Mis-esque revolutionary war paint, and find some good tartans.

But honestly, real talk, i would date this man, mostly because he’s like, “Hey, im really proud of my heritage, but also i’m quite elegant and formal, but also, im wearing french war paint”.

OKAY that’s all for now, but there WILL be more.

GRAPHIC.

image

“graphic” is currently having it’s moment as THE aesthetic buzzword. much thanks to marc jacobs and louis vuitton’s spring 13 shows, the trend is beginning to actualize before our very eyes.

there’s something quite appealing about 1960’s, cool girl stripes. perhaps in the light of the new year, it’s a bit cliche, but there’s something that about graphicness that brings sharp clarity and freshness.

there’s also a nod to the women who were behind the mod movement of the 60s in london who shed their full skirts and pin curls for cigarettes and eyeliner. they were rebellious in their time for making themselves visible and autonomous, not wanting to be attached to a man and seeking their own independence and identity.AND WE ALL KNOW I CAN AGREE WITH THAT.

for sake of importance, i will also throw add that the shift crop top is having a major moment (as depicted below in louis vuitton’s spring 13 runway), but that my friends…is another story for another day.

and just in case you also feel the passion behind this mod revival, here’s some picks JUST FOR YOU:

image

1. J Crew bikini top (i would personally love to wear this bad boy in the least conventional way possible, and that is with a high waisted black pencil skirt, and and open chambray button up)

2. Dior Liquid eyeliner

3. Madewell striped knit pullover

4. Topshop graphic tee

5. Alice and Olivia striped pumps

6. Striped slouchy pants

7. Banana Republic striped tulip skirt

*one last note* while the subculture of this movie isn’t quite pertinent to the mod movement, “that thing you do” WAS set in 1964. and besides being a complete dream of a story and boasting a catchy soundtrack, liv tyler’s hair and makeup in this movie are killing it. watch for inspiration.

always looking ahead.

I realize this is the antithesis of my last post and if I’m being totally honest, I don’t even really like Spring. You could pretty much slap a pumpkin on anything and I’d buy it. You can’t just do that in spring. However - it was just spring fashion week….like a month ago. Retailers are busy planning away their spring seasons (I’m placing orders right now for our spring months…) and it’s time to look forward, just for a bit. You can go grab a pumpkin spice latte after this.

Louis Vuitton. Marc Jacobs is a perpetual genius. Perusing these looks is what made me excited for spring in the first place. Such great 60s silhouettes with major MAJOR collars and lace detailing. Feminine but not in an overly cutesy way. Plus the whole show was shown on a white carousel. So dreamy.

The final Kate Moss look is so important.

Proenza Schouler. I was hesitant to jump on the Proenza Schouler bandwagon because it seemed like such hip hype. However, the legitimacy of their collections the last few seasons has won me over. They don’t play on trends and stay tried and true to their lines. Loved their infusion of Hawaiian prints and can’t wait to see how that plays out this Spring.

Alexander McQueen. Sarah Burton is literally THE woman of the year. She stepped into ginormous shoes as the Creative Director after the tragic passing of Alexander McQueen in 2010 and won the world over in April the second Kate Middleton stepped out her carriage and her wedding dress of the century was showcased. She’s done such an incredible job creating looks that 100% fit the aesthetic of the house, but are innovative and fresh.

I want to wear this red dress every day of my life.

I want someone to wear this to awards season.

Prada. This show was INCREDIBLE. My jaw actually dropped at the teal, pink and black colorblocked dress. This collection had such a Prada vibe with extremely wearable looks.

Valentino. You know how much I love Valentino. And how Valentino: The Last Emperor made me cry. This show got rave reviews as the best collection since the new designers stepped in. I like it, don’t get me wrong.

The long sleeved black dress is clearly very Valentino. And, before I digress, the long sleeved gown is AMAZING, literally GORGEOUS.

But every time Valentino shows it kind of breaks my heart. The house has not been the same since Valentino “retired” in 2007 when an Italian conglomerate bought out the house and essentially ousted Valentino from his own company. None of the looks implicit the same level of design and inspiration. This was so evident in this most recent collection and made me think of an article I recently read (that I REALLY wish I could remember where I read it…) that debates both sides of the question - does capitalism kill art? It’s such an interesting question, especially in the realm of fashion.

When you strip fashion of its art, you’re left with clothing; which in it’s essence is a basic economic need. Fashion perfectly bridges economics and art, which is where the tug of war comes in to play. Capitalism vs. Art. Investors vs. Designers. Who’s winning?

In the case of Valentino, the investors bought out the artistic genius. It’s interesting to wonder who’s dictating what we wear.

Anyways. I’m off my tangent. I wrote my senior thesis on the economics of fashion and explored that topic in a much deeper sense. Also, if the topic interests you I HIGHLY recommend the book Deluxe: How Luxury Lost It’s Luster

I’m over spring. I’m over my tangent. And I can’t wait to wear tweed and knits the rest of the week while drinking pumpkin lattes.

what i want.

I wish that we lived in a society where everyone dressed entirely avant-garde. I wish that I could look at someone at completely understand how meticulously complicated they are by the art they wore on their bodies. I wish every interaction, late night conversation, and complication was spit out in one garment that elicited tears it was constructed so emotionally.

Although, some people would really get the bad end of the deal on that. But think of how beautiful those who are the most troubled would be.

Until my dreams come true, I want to wear:

SLEEVES. big pouffy sheer dramatic feminine ethereal sleeves.

Marc Jacobs Fall 2011.

Louis Vuitton Fall 2011

Fendi Fall 2011

Right? They are right. SO so right.

On another note, I really enjoyed the Mary Kate and Ashley interview in April’s Vogue. Maybe I’m nostalgically stuck in Full House or maybe I still occasionally watch Passport to Paris with my roommates. Whatever. I actually really enjoy The Row and thought their Fall 11 collection was well done, specifically this deconstructed beauty:

I want to believe that the girls are actively involved in their line like they say they are, because if so, I have a high level of respect for them as artists and young business women, co-CEOing Dualstar, which is worth approximately $1 billion. Success in that combination is not easily found, and maybe I want to be an Olsen twin when I grow up. It’s not a big deal. Read the interview and decide for yourself. I guess we’ll never really know how involved they are in their branding and design. Life’s greatest mystery.

SECOND to today’s greatest mystery: is that Comet, resurrected from the dead to appear in Vogue?

I think I want a dog too.

A bit of Paris fashion week.

Last week the most stylish people in the world were concentrated in the most stylish city in the world for Paris fashion week.

The funny thing about fashion is…as excited as I am about fall, we’re looking at spring collections. Always looking ahead. Some favorites:

Louis Vuitton: ‘Campy’ is the internet buzzword to describe Marc Jacobs’ creative genius for this collection. As a lover of color, I cannot get enough of this show. From the 1920s flapper-esque vibe, to the bold metallic waist bands to the anything-but-neutral animal print….these clothes make me wish I had a reason to where them.

Yves Saint Laurent

Valentino I loved the subtle femininity of this collection, found in the delicate bows and tiny polka dots.

Chanel

(love that Crystal Renn walked)

And I leave you with this:

I dare you to find something sexier than a male model with his son in matching Chanel.

Fashionably Dreaming of Fall 2010.

This blog post has taken 24 hours worth of consideration. Yesterday Style.com (Vogue’s affiliate website) released it’s 497 item Fall accessory must-haves. I spent too much time reviewing and selecting my personal favorites. They presented them under the categories of: Booties, Classics, Divine Excess and Furs & Skins. I however, recategorized them according to how I would personally style them (this is hypothetically speaking that I have a fabulous Fall 2010 wardrobe to accentuate these accessories). My categories are as follows:

Fabulous: These are the items I would wear if every night I fell asleep drenched in diamonds on pure silk sheets. If I wore heels with my pajamas and I had a driver for my Bentley. This is certainly the most far fetched category (as I write from my jersey knit sheets…)

City: These are the items I would wear if I lived in New York, a casual young professional who has just a few amazing designer pieces, frosting my basic wardrobe that I could style into every outfit I needed. (This is not too far fetched…)

Work: These are the items I would wear if I had a job. Not just any job, but a job that when I walked down the aisles of cubicles into my corner office, everyone checked out what I was wearing, because they secretly wanted it as well. (Damn. This is far fetched too).

FABULOUS:

Louboutin. Fur. Crystal. Leopard. Imagine wearing these with an LBD.

Louis Vuitton’s entire Fall 2010 line was pure genius, easily my favorite. I would pair this with a snug black turtleneck for an extra-autumny feel.

I am LOVING the embellished heel look. It’s just enough without looking too gawdy. Imagine how cute these would look from behind!

These Givenchy boots are a statement. But I think they would look savvy paired with a black legging.

THIS IS TO DIE FOR. It screams Givenchy. It’s somehow Audrey Hepburn meets Michael Jackson. It’s absolutely incredible.

These are Las Vegas shoes. I’d wear with a gold satin one shouldered unstructured minidress.

CITY:

This would be such an easy bag to grab and go all day long. I love the variation on my beloved satchel. I would love to see Topshop do a great knockoff of this.

Pure A Wang genius. Skinny jeans. Boyfriend jeans. Tights and dresses. Leggings. You could wear these infinite ways. I love the chunky heel and toe with the delicate tie. The color is a great hue; a neutral but still bold enough to bring attention it itself.

Brown boots are a staple in my life. But wait. These are better than brown boots. They’re better than black boots. And they’re Louboutins. Win Win Win!

If I had this bag, I would carry it to work, run errands with it, go out with it at night…heck this bag would become my boyfriend. And I’d sleep with it under my pillow.

WORK:

These Louis’ would instantly increase anyone’s intellect.

Work booties. Paired with a black pencil skirt, they would be office appropriate but still fashion forward.

I would want to dance on my desk in these. How organic are these! They scream down to earth.

These remind me of a grown up version of my favorite shoes when I was five. Black suede with delicate gold buckles. But these are much sexier.

These are really interesting. I’d love to see them on an actual foot, but I think they’re brilliant.

Nothing says accomplished business woman like a Tod’s alligator tote.

I love these so much. It’s as if you can see the shoe itself pushing your booty up. The conservative toe really balances it out.

These shoes will love your legs. I love me an ankle strap; but I don’t love me an ankle strap that cuts my leg off, thus producing a cankle effect. Ew. These completely eliminate that. A dramatic black pointy toe elongates your leg and the nude straps provide a subtle detail. Love.
