AMERICAN WOMAN

“THE AVERAGE AMERICAN GIRL POSSESSES THE VALUABLE QUALITIES OF NATURALNESS, HONESTY, AND INOFFENSIVE STRAIGHTFORWARDNESS; SHE IS NEARLY BARREN OF TROUBLESOME CONVENTIONS AND ARTIFICIALITIES; CONSEQUENTLY, HER PRESENCE AND WAYS ARE UNEMBARRASSING.” - MARK TWAIN

“SHE BEHAVES AS IF SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL. MOST AMERICAN WOMEN DO. IT IS THE SECRET OF THEIR CHARM.” - OSCAR WILDE

“WHILE YOU HAVE TO BE NATURAL, YOU ALSO HAVE TO BE DIFFERENT. IF, THAT IS, YOU WANT TO MAKE AN IMPACT” - SLIM KEITH

“I DON’T MIND LIVING IN A MAN’S WORLD, AS LONG AS I CAN BE A WOMAN IN IT” - MARILYN MONROE

So I’m working on this this thing for work right now that relates to defining American Style. Since I’m a narcissist, it’s impossible to define American style before I look within and ask how I perceive American Style for myself.

Lauren Hutton on a motorcycle with Robert Redford feels like a good starting point.

As much as fashion loves chic Parisians and romantic Italians and exotic, uncharted lands…there’s something incredibly inspiring about iconic and classic American pieces. What makes our style unique, as American women, is that we can be just as comfortable and just as feminine in a pair of jeans and sneakers as we can in heels and lipstick. And I think once we understand and harness that understated simplicity, our confidence and style are born.

I really, really LOVE the above images of New Mexico’s landscape, taken by German photographer Thomas Hoepker in 1990.

San Francisco doesn’t really have a Spring or Summer, so I find it impossible to want to incorporate soft florals into my wardrobe when it’s 60 degrees outside. Also, overt florals make my eyes roll because they’re just not interesting. The below image from January’s Vogue has been on my wall the last few months, and the juxtaposition of graphic stripes with florals continues to resonate with me.

image

Lately my favorite outfits are those that don’t make a lot sense - florals with stripes, dresses with sneakers, overalls and lipstick. But at least it keeps things INTERESTING.

GRAPHIC.

image

“graphic” is currently having it’s moment as THE aesthetic buzzword. much thanks to marc jacobs and louis vuitton’s spring 13 shows, the trend is beginning to actualize before our very eyes.

there’s something quite appealing about 1960’s, cool girl stripes. perhaps in the light of the new year, it’s a bit cliche, but there’s something that about graphicness that brings sharp clarity and freshness.

there’s also a nod to the women who were behind the mod movement of the 60s in london who shed their full skirts and pin curls for cigarettes and eyeliner. they were rebellious in their time for making themselves visible and autonomous, not wanting to be attached to a man and seeking their own independence and identity.AND WE ALL KNOW I CAN AGREE WITH THAT.

for sake of importance, i will also throw add that the shift crop top is having a major moment (as depicted below in louis vuitton’s spring 13 runway), but that my friends…is another story for another day.

and just in case you also feel the passion behind this mod revival, here’s some picks JUST FOR YOU:

image

1. J Crew bikini top (i would personally love to wear this bad boy in the least conventional way possible, and that is with a high waisted black pencil skirt, and and open chambray button up)

2. Dior Liquid eyeliner

3. Madewell striped knit pullover

4. Topshop graphic tee

5. Alice and Olivia striped pumps

6. Striped slouchy pants

7. Banana Republic striped tulip skirt

*one last note* while the subculture of this movie isn’t quite pertinent to the mod movement, “that thing you do” WAS set in 1964. and besides being a complete dream of a story and boasting a catchy soundtrack, liv tyler’s hair and makeup in this movie are killing it. watch for inspiration.

MOODY.

Hey hey hey.

I’ve been working on a typical fall post in my blog aresenal, chalk full of photos of Jane Birkin in a pea coat, scenes from Love Story, and cable knit sweaters. Of course these sentiments are all timeless, integral reasons why I love Autumn, but this weekend I noticed something…noteworthy, if you will.

While sticking fall tearsheets on my bedroom wall from September issues, I noticed a trend. My philosophy behind tearing is simple - if I instantly like it, I tear it, and keep it for inspiration. I noticed nearly all my fall tears were extremely dark and moody, quite atypical from my usually optimistic approach to the season.

Of course this is due to the overwhelmingly anonymous approach high end labels took to the Baroque trend from the runways to their Fall campaigns. I read one article describing it as Heritage Luxe - “a luxurious focus on high society heritage, set in elaborate stately homes featuring opulent fringed eating, flocked wallpapers and gilded framed artwork.”

YUMMMY.

Perhaps it’s the romantic appeal to another stylistic era, or the association with deeply rooted aristocracy, but the mood is quite inspiring, especially when living in a city like San Francisco, whose ominous, brooding weather feels agreeable to this aesthetic.

Also, I’ve never been one to argue with some fancy drama.

How do we make this wearable? Three things on my horizon:

That’s all for now. If you need me, I’ll be watching some kind of Keira Knightley period film.

yesteryear.

Hey losers, remember me?

There’s nothing like some fresh weekend inspiration to revive this dormant rendering of my thoughts, brought to you directly from yesteryear.

Yes that is Dr. McDreamy himself AKA Patrick Dempsey, who I would like to believe WAS the HEART OF SUMMER 1997. If you’re sick of me talking about the 90’s you can leave now. These J Crew covers make me feel all warm inside and make me wanna be like Charlotte York on the outside.

Just look at that douche bag carrying a bucket of apples with a sweater-draped babe on his shoulder! Can you even get over it?!?!?

It’s crisp and classic American, just in time for the 4th of July. And by “it” I mean Ricky Lauren, wife of Ralph. Ralph Lauren.

I’m ready for preppy 90s to be ironically cool again, since all Fashion is Recycled. Or is it?

Whatever, what really got me going this morning were the below two images, found from Vogue’s archives today. Glamour so dramatic it hurts. Completely different aesthetics, both from yesteryear, which is really the point of this. Well, there’s not a point to this. But what else is new.

Have a good weekend. I’ll leave you with the words of Mizz Janet Jackson: “I just wanna dance, is that a crime?”

xoxo

Hi, Boys!

Earlier this week, a certain well dressed gentleman I know requested a post for the male audience.

I’ve previously expressed my obsession with menswear. I would never trade in my skirts, but guys really do have it lucky. There’s such a simplistic element of men’s style and there’s really nothing better than a guy who isn’t afraid to dress himself well.

So, I’ve assembled a basic field guide for essentials all men should have in their wardrobe. We’re starting with the basics. Some of you may be far more advanced, so, this may bore you. But I know I speak for many females when I say we’re smitten when a man has good style.

1. Notre Dame Jacket. Varsity jackets are currently right on trend, and if worn well, I think they’re a great statement (NOT worn while playing beer pong or going to an alumni football game….)

2. Pocket Sweater. Small details like interesting pockets instantly escalate menswear from everyday to eye-catching.

3.Rag and Bone beanie. Every guy needs a good beanie.

4. Warby Parker glasses.

5. Socks. I’m not sure why, I think it’s neat when guys wear colored socks. It’s unexpected. I swear I don’t have a feet fetish.

6. Jack Spade man bag. It’s not a purse. And this Jack Spade bag is an excellent combination of style, functionality, and masculinity.

7. Clark’s Desert Boots. Every guy should own a pair of desert boots.

8. Taylor Stitch shirt. Additionally, every guy should own one REALLY good gingham shirt.

9. iPhone case. Now - if you’re a guy reading this PLEASE explain to me WHY no guy ever uses an iPhone case. I KNOW you drop your phones. I’ve had so many male friends shatter iPhones. I know you all enjoy spending money on Apple products - but really, why not invest in a case? Anyone?

10. John Varvatos Work Boots. Badass.

11. Bomber Jacket. Men’s outerwear is so much cooler than women’s. Take advantage of that, boys.

12. Parka. In my favorite color.

Additionally, I would like to take this time to emphasize to you all the importance of owning a good bow tie. They’re absolutely timeless and are the single accessory that instantly elevates boys to gentlemen. They also make me weak in the knees. So. Perhaps I’m biased. But this is the SICKEST bow tie I’ve seen yet.

Also, this isn’t just about “looking hot”. I’m not posting a picture of Ryan Gosling for a reason. It’s important that guys have their own personal style - even if it’s as simple as a t shirt and jeans. Wear what makes you feel good and confident, and I promise the ladies will take notice. I’m a lady, so…I know. I’ve noticed.

In conclusion, I would like to offer a few sartorially prominent men with timeless style, just in case you’re looking for a little inspiration.

feeling autumnal.

I think Autumn is perhaps the most tangible season.

Love Story. I made my roommates watch this once and they honestly got upset because it’s a terribly depressing movie, but it’s beautiful. So if you’re into really emotional tragedies, which apparently I am because Netflix told me that once, then I recommend.

Soon enough I will spend an autumn in New York.

rodarte & j crew.

Two all time favorites that showed today. First, Rodarte -

Front rowed by Anna Wintour, Taylor Swift, Tavi Gevinson and the Fanning sisters (PS - how much do you love this picture? Anna Wintour laughing and Taylor Swift trying to play it cool…so great…) Rodarte showed today to mixed reviews. They’ve always been one of my favorites because I think they translate really successfully in a dramatic way. Their shows are always art first, fashion second. The New York Times said it best today, “what fuels the appeal of their collections is an eternal nostalgia for that moment in high school when anything seemed possible.” The obvious inspiration for their Spring/Summer 12 collection today was Van Gogh’s sunflowers and starry nights. Maybe not my favorite Rodarte collection, but these looks are my favorites.

On to the next- J Crew. We’re working backwards on this one. The second to last look made me, in the words of Rachel Zoe, die. Every element of this is perfect- sheer, feminine polka dots, a preppy striped coat, boyfriend denim shorts. In theory, none of these pieces should be styled together, but that’s just why J Crew works. It’s imperfectly perfect. It’s mismatched and realistic but yet unexpected and sophisticated. AND THAT GREEN BAG. “I die” -Rachel Zoe.

This is an interesting silhouette choice for J Crew. The slouch is very Olsen twin-esque, but I think they’ll sell the pieces separately (imagine the slouchy sweater with a pencil pant and a fitted oxford shirt with the skirts). I like the slouch, but let’s be honest - it doesn’t look great on anyone who weighs more than 90 pounds.

Same with these pants. I’m interested to see these on. I’m a big fan, but curious as to how they’ll translate. Color wise I’m loving the orange pops and the color blocking, continuing what we’re seeing right now in fall.

Absolutely mastering the imperfectly matched prints.

The green pant look reminds me of an Oscar de la Renta resort look. Its’ very 1970s chic. As for that classic J Crew skirt - OBSESSED. I’m also really digging the updated saltwater sandal heel.

And the final look. So many good shows today. Expect more soon.

september highlights.

my september highlights on my wall.

I know what you’re thinking…September?!? It’s still August! MY BIRTHDAY hasn’t even happened yet! Don’t worry. You didn’t miss anything (or my birthday). That is unless, you haven’t picked up September issues yet. You know…the most important issues of the year. I’ve just finished perusing approximately 2,000 pages (Vogue alone consists of 800 pages total this month) and for my humble self (if you want a more authoritative condensed september, check out Cathy Horyn’s 5 fall must haves), these were my highlights

Alexa Chung, InStyle-giving a preview of her upcoming second collaboration with Madewell.

Miu Miu- someone should count how many times these Miu Miu glittered bad boys were featured in total in all the September mags. It could potentially be in the triple digits…

J Crew’s Cashmere Russian Ballet- SO. BEAUTIFUL.

PROENZA SCHOULER, LOOK #25- Forgot how much I loved these pants, sheer paneled top and the shoes, featured in a Nordstrom ad that can be found in Vogue.

FUCHSIA/RED/ORANGE COLORBLOCKING- This can be seen EVERYWHERE, but really: how cute are these J Crew kids? Also seen on an adult J Crew model and SJP…and seriously, everywhere…

TOMMY HILFIGER’S FALL CAMPAIGN- witty and whimsical.

STELLA MCCARTNEY SHEER POLKA DOTS- Again, the ad campaign is stellar and the look can be found in editorials in Vogue, Elle and In Style.

Vogue’s piece on Republican Presidential candidate Jon Huntsman- Ok, so not fashion related, but I still enjoyed and think he’s my favorite candidate thus far.

and last but not least….

JOHN GALLIANO’S MASTERPIECE- I was skeptical about Kate Moss covering Vogue this month and frankly, wasn’t terribly excited to read about ANOTHER wedding. But my heart stopped when I saw the wedding dress Galliano designed for her. If this doesn’t make every girl want to get married…I don’t know what will.
